About  The Tasmanian Whittingtons
This website is a work in progress and will be added to as information comes to hand. It is being
developed by Ian,the eldest son of John ("Jack") Whittington and Vera Whittington nee Guymer.
Please contact me if you have any questions or information that you consider would be helpful.

The intention is to publish as much information as possible about the maternal and paternal lines
of both Jack and Vera. Vera's father was a Guymer and her mother's maiden name was O'Neil. John
was obviously a Whittington and his mother's maiden name was O'Grady.

This Family tree site is dedicated to my Father who unfortunately passed away far too young and to
my dear Mother who passed away on the twenty sixth of August, two thousand and eleven in
Queenstown on the wild West Coast of Tasmania.

Please enjoy looking around. Just a couple of tips to help you on your visit.

There is a link containing the Guymer ancestry.

The O'Neil ancestry is very interesting. It was much the work of Milton O'Neil, his wife
Margaret,John and Denise Garbutt and Cathie Humphries. Unfortunately Milton has passed away. He was
unable to get back beyond Edward O'Neil and Charlotte O'Brien despite trips to Tasmania and
Ireland.
An interesting observation is that if Charles O'Neil had not been so bad tempered we Whittingtons
would probably be Roman Catholics and not Anglicans.

Check out the Whittington ancestry and read about our convict ancestor, Elizabeth McBride; "Jack"
Whittington's great grandmother.

I have recently added some information about Vera Whittingtons' convict ancestors. Yes, she has
some too. There is a link to a more detailed list of Thomas Reynolds descendants.
When looking at photographs and documents there is a magnifying glass application available. It
can be found at the top of the photo.

Thank you to the following people who have assisted me with my research. Milton and Margaret
O'Neil, Ron and Denice Garbutt, Cathie Humphries, Kellie Keen, Susan Hood (Port Arthur History
Centre), Jayne Reed, Lyndy Smith, Nell Guymer, The research staff at Kiama Family History
Centre, Robyn McNeil and Bob Parnham. In 2009 Bob passed to me a small suitcase that belonged to
Robert Francis Whittington, our Uncle Bob. The photos and documents within provided a wonderful
snapshot of William Whittington's family. A big thank you to Joyce Rooke. Until April 2011 Joyce
was the only living grandchild of William and Susan Whittington. Sadly Joyce passed away nine
months short of her one hundredth birthday. Joyce was able to identify many unnamed photographs
and provide her memories of her Uncles, Aunts and cousins. Her favourite uncle was our
Grandfather, Henry Edmund. You will find she has provided a very interesting picture of our Great
Grandfathers' family in Hobart in the early nineteen hundreds. Recently Lyn and Graeme Kirkwood
have helped me add a new line of descendants to our family tree. Graeme is the grandson of the
last born daughter (Jane) of George Whittington. Very few people had established the existence of
Jane; certainly not this researcher. Thanks to Lyn and Graeme. In January 2013 I was contacted by
Rosemary Spencer who is Jane Whittingtons grand daughter and Rosemary has many stories to share
and some amazing photos and documents that have added much to our knowledge of the Whittingtons
and Clifford families. Thanks to Rosemary. Diane Pye from Napier in New Zealand has also recently
provided me with a rich line of ancestry linked to the Whittingtons and Cliffords. There are still
many questions to be answered about the many links between the Whittingtons and the Canterbury
area of New Zealand.

Please feel free to pass access information to this site to family members and friends
who would like to visit. Please enjoy and don't forget to sign the visitors book.
Regards, Ian

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Tree View graphically shows the relationship of selected person to their kin. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Do you know who your second cousins are? Try the Kinship Relationships Tool. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
